Chipmunks are cute animals that belong to the family of Sciuridae. The others family of Sciuridae are tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, flying squirrels, and prairie dogs.

The size of squirrels is bigger than chipmunks, the range length of ground squirrels are 8 to 12 inches, Tree squirrels are about 12 to 20 inches, and chipmunks are from 6 to 12 inches.
Another the diversities of their physical characteristics are Squirrels have a white ring on their eyes but chipmunks don’t have.
Squirrels can be found in nearly all part of the world except the polar region, but chipmunks are only in the North America.
Approximately 25 species of chipmunks and more than 200 species of Squirrels can be identified that spread wide in the world.
The habitat of chipmunks and ground squirrels are underground burrows that consist of some tunnels, whereas tree squirrels and flying squirrels live in holes on the trees.
What is the most common species of chipmunks in the world?
There are two common special of 25 species spread In the world that identified, they are eastern chipmunks and western chipmunks.
The length size (including tail) of eastern chipmunks is 3 -5 inches, their weight are 2 – 5 ounces, and their fur color is red to brown with five stripes from head to tail and two striped on their face.
The fur colors of western chipmunks are brown, gray, reddish and white which have stripes on their head to tail. The length size of western chipmunks is about 6 – 11 inches and two ounces in weight.
What is the damage caused by chipmunks to our home?
Although the faces of chipmunks are appear cute and cubby, but they can cause some damage to your properties.

Those include disease are Spotted fever, tuberculosis, herpes virus, salmonella, rabies, and the plague. So that, avoid to direct contact and touch them is the best way to safe from all those diseases infection.
How to get rid of chipmunks?
If you want to get rid of chipmunks, you can use these methods. They are using repellents, trapping and releasing, and protecting bird feeder.
Actually, using repellent to against chipmunks is not effective way. There is no repellent recommended because no one registered for use to rid of chipmunks.
Although some commercial repellent promise to removed chipmunks, but in a fact, they only repel chipmunks and squirrels, then they might be possible to came back again.
Applying commercial repellent products such as thiram, bitrex, nicotine sulfate, methyl nonyl ketone crystals, and polybutene should be repeated because they can be washed by raining or watering.
For the safety, making a homemade repellent by mixing a teaspoon Lysol, 3 ounces Epsom salt and 1 gallon of water is the better way.
Using a trap
Although a trap might not insure to remove all chipmunks in your home, but this method still can be used as other solution.
But before using this method, you need to make sure that you find right place where is far from home to replace chipmunks trapped.
These following tips for trapping and relocating a chipmunk (without killing them) that you have to know:
- Use small trap around 10 to 20 inches in length, so chipmunks get hard to loose
- Place a trap in the hidden areas but near to burrows
- Put some baits such as peanut to interest in coming to the trap
- Don’t forget to keep on check the trap and replace them if you find chipmunks trapped
How to prevent chipmunks of making their burrows in your home?
Preventing chipmunks of making their home in your yard, garden, and home is easier than chase them away. There are some ways that can be used to prevent chipmunks:
Build fence all round home
Fence can block chipmunks to come in to your yard, garden, and your home. If you want to build fence around home, your fence need to at least deeper more than eight inches, so chipmunks could not burrow to pass it.
Sealing the small hole or crack on exterior home
Actually the chipmunks prefer to make their burrows outside home, but they might be possible for them to come inside your home because of small crack or hole in exterior.
To avoid they go to inside, you need to seal cracks or holes of home using rubber.
If you have pets such as cat or dog, you might use them to control chipmunks. Let them stay outside your home, commonly chipmunks are scared them.
